Shares of some Chinese companies trading on U.S. stock exchanges fell Friday after a report showed that China’s manufacturing activity was stagnant in September.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly slipped under the 11,000-point mark in volatile trading Friday afternoon. The blue-chip indicator was off about 1.4% while the S&P 500 Index fell 1.7% and the Nasdaq Composite was down 1.9%.
