You won’t have to imagine for much longer as near field communications (NFC) is coming soon to a store near you.
NFC is intended mainly for use in mobile phones, though there are several specific uses at present. One is card emulation in which the NFC device mimics an existing contact-less card. There is also a reader mode in which the NFC device is active and reads a Radio Frequency Identification Device. This is now used in applications such interactive advertising.
